چکیده

We discuss the impact of locally implemented behaviour on global behaviour specification in a federation of object-oriented databases. In particular, given a specification of an integrated view of a number of component databases, we discuss the process of determining the global methods that are implicitly implemented by a given set of local methods on these component databases. To this end, we develop the notions of objectivity and subjectivity of local methods, indicating whether the execution of a local method affects the global view exactly as it affects the local database, 6eehaviour equivalences between local methods, indicating whether local methods of different components have similar effect, and behaviour concurrences, indicating whether local methods respond to the same event. These notions can be used as a basis for tools supporting the engineering activity of specifying global behaviour in database federations. 01998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. An Object Query Language for Multimedia Federations

The F́ıschlár system provides a large centralised repository of multimedia files. As expansion is difficult in centralised systems and as different user groups have a requirement to define their own schemas, the EGTV (Efficient Global Transactions for Video) project was established to examine how the distribution of this database could be managed. The federated database approach is advocated whe...

Modeling Database Federations in Terms of Evolving Agents Sachsen-anhalt under Fkz: 1987a/0025 (federating Heterogeneous Database Systems and Local Data Management Components for Global Integrity Maintenance)

For advanced information systems, the interoperation between heterogeneous database systems which autonomously manage their existing, independently developed databases is a fundamental issue. Thus, organization's data is virtually represented at the global level in a uniform way and transparent access to distributed and heterogeneous data sources becomes possible. In this paper, we present a fo...

Federation views as a basis for querying and updating database federations

This paper addresses the problem of how to query and update so-called database federations. A database federation provides for tight coupling of a collection of heterogeneous component databases into a global integrated system. This problem of querying and updating a database federation is tackled by describing a logical architecture and a general semantic framework for precise specification of...

An ORM-Driven Implementation Framework for Database Federations

Database federations are employed more and more in situations involving virtual and integrated information on demand, e.g., real-time integration of two databases. Heterogeneity in hardware and software platforms, as well heterogeneity in underlying semantics of participating local databases, makes it a hard challenge to design a consistent and well-performing global database federation. The OR...

Towards Secure XML Federations

The integration of isolated XML repositories has drawn more and more interest recently. In this paper, we propose XML federations to provide global e-services while preserving the necessary autonomy and security of each individual repository. First we show a logical architecture of XML federations, which is adapted from the common architecture of traditional federated databases according to the...
